The need to define one’s self has played out to be increasingly vital in recent years. From the way we hire people to the way we disseminate information. Those who’ve attended Shell Life can attest to the stark differences between the customs our colleagues work in teams.
“Is that so?” One queries.
Chances are you used words such as "shy" or "confident", "friendly" or "reserved". When trying to understand our own, or other people's behaviour, we tend to fall back on these psychological categories without even thinking
The desire to define ourselves is undeniable. Personality by which we generally means thoughts, feelings, desires, perceptions and the very nature that makes us individual fascinates and challenges us. At least yours truly finds the question “What makes me, me?” particularly relevant.
"I do not plead guilty to a shallow view of human nature, when I propose to apply, as it were, a foot-rule to its heights and depths,"
In 1921, Carl Jung published “Psychological Types” and circa the 2nd World War, the mother- daughter team of Katherine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers concoted the MBTI a set of psychometric tests intended to measure personality in terms of opposites. But is human personality really defined by 4 opposing letters of the MBTI? Perhaps its over simplistic as one could attest that different people behave differently given different scenarios and influence at the particular time variable.
Perhaps its best not to think of personality as a rigid digital affair (you are or you’re not) but as self potrayal is concern, dependant heavily on the context of the conversation or scenario. Many of us even hold back our behaviors given a different time such as in the office, with groups or just alone.
The author is an ENTJ but declines to be stereotyped as such.
